How to Do a Modern Shag Haircut

The shag haircut is having a moment again, but it’s come a long way from the retro vibe of the 70s, made popular by Jane Fonda. It’s no wonder the shag haircut has become such a popular cut among clients because it’s low maintenance but also has an edgy, rock’n’roll feel. The shag accentuates the face by adding height at the crown and volume in the back, framing with a fringe.

The shag haircut is also very versatile and works well with various hair textures. A hairstylist needs to work with the hair to create movement and textural layers to softly frame the face, so this look will work best on medium to long hair.

Modern Shag Haircut Tutorial with Cellophanes Color Glossing | Sebastian Professional

Step1: Color the hair

Prep the hair by washing it with the Hydre Moisturising Shampoo.

Divide the hair into 4 quadrants. Apply color 2** at the root area starting 3mm from the scalp and follow by applying color 1* toward the mid lengths and ends on pre bleached panels. Twist the hair quadrants and pin them up onto the top of the head. Then wrap the hair completely under a plastic cap.

Step 2: Cut the fringe

Refabricate the hair with No.Breaker from root to tip followed by a cocktail of Whipped Crème Styling Cream and Potion 9 Leave-In Styling Conditioner.

Isolate the fringe area and create a rounded section going down the occipital bone. Split the fringe in two and taking the bridge of the nose as a reference point, cut with a horizontal skimming technique.

Step 3: Cut the hair

Move to the side and frame the face using the pinch & cut technique in the natural fall. Work this way section by section keeping your guideline as a reference, then mirror the same on the other side.

Cut the perimeter to the desired length with the pinch & cut technique, then release the top section and choose between the back cutting technique and the vertical skimming for a shattered layered feel. Connect the front and the back of the hair sections and roughly blow dry the hair.
